One of the things which struck me most as we landed back in London on the 18th of December 2014 was the vast amount of things there were to see at this time of year. Commercial Christmas was everywhere to be seen in a way that it was not in Bangkok. Lights, trees, various decorations, seasonal drinks at Starbucks… It was all there and it was quite overwhelming. When I was a child one of my favourite things to do was to help plant trees, flowers and assorted growing things in the garden. This involved a lot of digging. You needed to prepare the ground ready to plant. The correct tools were essential. Finding the right place to start digging was another key factor (at age 5 I always had guidance). Digging was sometimes hard work, it was often messy but it was always rewarding.
Christmas, it is a season of contrasts. On the one hand commercial Christmas is crazy busy for many of us. We are running around trying to prepare everything for everyone and never seem to have enough time to get it done. But on the other hand it can be a time of great sadness and loneliness for others. Our friends and family are no longer present, our job is not as stable as it once seemed, indeed the sounds and sights of the season sometimes repel us. Continue reading
